Overview

The groups of this area aim to improve the outcomes of patients with infectious diseases. The Epidemiology and Public Health group focuses on the epidemiology and prevention of healthcare acquired infections, transmissible infections and on the new vaccines. The Infectious Diseases group focuses on improving the strategies of clinical problems observed in clinical practice. The Microbiology group studies the mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance, pathogenicity, genomic epidemiology and infectious diseases diagnostics. The CRIPS group focuses on developing translational and clinical research in critical care, while the SODIR group works in the areas of sepsis, organ dysfunction and resuscitation. There is also a group focused on clinical research on children’s infectious diseases and primary immunodeficiencies. Finally, the CIBBIM-Nanomedicine group Works in the synthesis, characterization and applications of engineered inorganic nanoparticles in the field of infectious diseases.

Group Leader: Victor Franco Puntes

In 2019 there have been important advances in the application of cerium oxide nanoparticles for the treatment of retinal and hepatic diseases. Once the preclinical studies are advanced, the GMP production of rare earth CeO2 nanoparticles is under study for ophthalmological treatment and a Clinical Trial prepared waiting for funding. At the same time, we coordinate an Euronanomed H2020 project consortium to develop the CeO2 eye therapy in combination with stem cells to restore vision. We have also started collaboration with the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Shen Zen where a chines presidential award has been granted to nurture this collaboration. In 2019 we have published our work on a surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy platform for the rapid point of care detection of viral or bacterial proteins in biological fluids.
