Immunomediated Diseases and Innovative Therapies

Overview

The Immunomediated Diseases and Innovative Therapies is a heterogeneous area composed by both translational and clinical research groups which cover fields such as immunology, respiratory and systemic diseases, pharmacology, clinical biochemistry, rheumatology, advanced therapies or transfusional medicine. Its main strength derives precisely from this heterogeneity and the complementarity of the scientific interests and expertise of the different groups, many of which are currently joining efforts and synergizing in a variety of collaborative research projects.

Group Leader: Francisco Rodríguez Frias

The Clinical Biochemistry  group has successfully achieved several goals in the development of diagnostic biomarkers and therapeutic tools related to   prostate cancer (new DNA binding motifs in PTOV1),  endocrine alterations (newbiomarkers for  acromegaly, thyroid autoimmune disease and bariatric surgery), metabolic diseases (lysosphingolipids as biomarkers for Parkinson disease diagnostic, urea cycle disorders biomarkers), kidney diseases (validation of ApoAIb as biomarker of relapsing idiopathic nephrotic syndrome, use of EGF in IgA nephropathy assessment). Special mention must be done to the work concerning hepatitis B, C and D virus (diagnostic strategies, quasispecies complexity, studies of the effects of new mutations of hepatitis viruses, cell culture and gene therapy models), with a great impact on the understanding of these diseases. Additionally, a challenging and innovative new investigation line has started: the analysis of big data applied to define more accurate reference ranges, in collaboration with WP den Elzen, Leiden University Medical Center, The Netherlands.
