The Epidemiology and Public Health group focuses on the epidemiology and prevention of healthcare acquired infections, transmissible infections and on the new vaccines. The Infectious Diseases group focuses on improving the strategies of clinical problems observed in clinical practice. The Microbiology group studies the mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance, pathogenicity, genomic epidemiology and infectious diseases diagnostics. The CRIPS group focuses on developing translational and clinical research in critical care, while the SODIR group works in the areas of sepsis, organ dysfunction and resuscitation. There is also a group focused on clinical research on children’s infectious diseases and primary immunodeficiencies. Finally, the CIBBIM-Nanomedicine group Works in the synthesis, characterization and applications of engineered inorganic nanoparticles in the field of infectious diseases.

Among the highlights of 2019, we have expanded our research line on vaccines and on chronic disease epidemiology. For the first, we have set up a prospective registry of vaccination in patients with Immuno-mediated inflammatory disease (IMID) who are candidates for biological treatment with the aim of evaluating vaccine immunogenicity and safety that will allow establishing the best vaccination strategy. For the second, we will study the prevalence and impact of comorbidity on Multiple Sclerosis prognosis.

As for clinical trials, our group has expanded its line of research on the adjuvanted recombinant Herpes Zoster vaccine testing its safety and immunogenicity in pediatric immunosuppressed patients and adults ?50 years of age with a prior episode of Herpes Zoster. Our team has also started a new line of investigation for a Respiratory Syncytial Virus vaccine in healthy pregnant women
