Vascular Biology and Metabolism (VAM)

< Back

Overview

The VAM area was created to allow a comprehensive, cooperative and multidisciplinary approach in basic, clinical and epidemiology research. The ultimate goal is the innovation and transfer of solutions in a group of diseases that are closely interrelated and that constitute the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the world: cardio-cerebrovascular disease, diabetes-metabolic syndrome and renal impairment. The VAM area includes preclinical and clinical research staff from our center, and collaborative work with groups of the highest international prestige. VAM area includes 8 groups: Cardiovascular Pathology, Diabetes and Metabolism, Nephrology, Ophthalmology (focused on retinal vascular disease), CIBBIM-Nanomedicine and Kidney Physiopathology, Medical Molecular Imaging, Neurovascular Diseases, and Research on Aging, Frailty and Transitions in Barcelona. All groups use an integrative tridimensional approach to generate knowledge on the mechanisms of diseases to generate new diagnostic and therapeutic tools.

Group Leader: Daniel Serón Micas

We created the Nephrology Laboratory focused on the study of Diabetic Nephropathy (1 grant from the Instituto Carlos III (isciii)).  Additionally a full time postdoc researcher, a  lab technician and a partial time doctoral student  have been contracted. Furthermore,  a multidisciplinary group for the study of renal complications of oncologic treatments has been created.

Kidney transplant projects have been mainly focused on the study of the alloimmune response ( 2 grants from isciii and 1 grant from Health Department Generalitat de Catalunya). Additionally,  we got a grant from the Spanish Society of Nephrology to study relationship between systemic inflammation and hypertension in kidney transplants. We joined the EUTRAIN consortium  (H2020) aimed to define a risk stratification model for kidney transplants that includes clinical, histological, immune and renal molecular biology parameters. The Nephrology group belongs to the Spanish Research Kidney Network.

During this year we have continued our involvement in clinical trials and we have started our first phase trial aimed to prevent the progression of fibrosis in kidney transplants.
