Overview

The Neuroscience area is consolidating its position as one of the largest clusters of research labs working on neurological diseases across Europe. At present, the area comprises 14 groups with more than one hundred fully dedicated researchers in close contact with top clinicians in the hospital. These research groups pursue a better and multifaceted understanding of the etiopathogenic mechanisms underlying a large variety of mostly adult but also pediatric neurological disorders including stroke, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, primary headaches, epilepsy, neuromuscular disorders, and also neurosurgical and psychiatric pathologies. The area also integrates groups involved in neuroimaging, analysis and interpretation of high-throughput data, and gene therapy strategies to target inflammatory and neurodegenerative neurological conditions.

Group Leader: Joan Sahuquillo Barris

In 2019, our group updated the revised systematic review on decompressive surgery in traumatic brain injured (TBI) patients for the Cochrane Collaboration. During this year, studies have continued, as well as the publication of original articles, included in the lines of research on congenital alterations of the craniocervical junction (sleep disorders and morphometric studies of the oropharynx and skull base), pathophysiology of severe TBI-electrical phenomena— and basic research focused on the role of molecular receptors involved in the formation of cerebral edema such as the upregulation sulfonylurea receptor -SUR1- and the pore-forming subunit of KATP -Kir6.2-) in the pathophysiological mechanisms of brain edema and cell death and in malignant brain tumors. During 2019, we organized a national symposium focused on controversies in the diagnosis and treatment of hydrocephalus. Additionally, we have remained involved in the ERN CRANIO (new COST Action project) and in the ERN ITHACA, and have recived support from 5 national and European grants (FIS, KidsBrainIT, BitMap, Marató TV3 and AECC).
