Overview

The Neuroscience area is consolidating its position as one of the largest clusters of research labs working on neurological diseases across Europe. At present, the area comprises 14 groups with more than one hundred fully dedicated researchers in close contact with top clinicians in the hospital. These research groups pursue a better and multifaceted understanding of the etiopathogenic mechanisms underlying a large variety of mostly adult but also pediatric neurological disorders including stroke, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, primary headaches, epilepsy, neuromuscular disorders, and also neurosurgical and psychiatric pathologies. The area also integrates groups involved in neuroimaging, analysis and interpretation of high-throughput data, and gene therapy strategies to target inflammatory and neurodegenerative neurological conditions.

Group Leader: Josep Gámez

The main lines of research of the group have focused on determining the genetic risk factors that influence the phenotypes of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), Myasthenia gravis (MG) and other neuromuscular diseases, based on a model of medicine translational research.

The group has described for the first time the p.A5V mutation of the SOD1 gene associated with ALS in a family from Spain. Also it has reported the existence of prionopathy in patients with ALS and FTD.

The group has identified new haplotypes of the HLA complex as risk factors in MG in the Spanish population, and it has incorporated a new PhD thesis project investigating the role of immunological abnormalities in patients with Parkinson’s disease associated with MG. Also it has described forms of Parkinsonism in patients with Spastic Paraplegia type 7.

Dr. Gamez is the only Spanish ALS specialist who is member of the ALSUNTANGLED network and he has collaborated in a Consensus-guide for management of MD2 (PMID:31583190)
