Immunomediated Diseases and Innovative Therapies

Overview

The Immunomediated Diseases and Innovative Therapies is a heterogeneous area composed by both translational and clinical research groups which cover fields such as immunology, respiratory and systemic diseases, pharmacology, clinical biochemistry, rheumatology, advanced therapies or transfusional medicine. Its main strength derives precisely from this heterogeneity and the complementarity of the scientific interests and expertise of the different groups, many of which are currently joining efforts and synergizing in a variety of collaborative research projects.

In 2019 the Rheumatology Research Group was granted a Horizon 2020 RIA grant as coordinator in the call: Systems approaches for the discovery of combinatorial therapies for complex disorders. This international multicentric project aims to identify drug combinations that can provide synergistic effect in immune-mediated inflammatory diseases, significantly improving the quality of life of these patients.

Using a unique analytical approach based on genome-wide variation data from a large number of patients and controls from the Spanish and North American populations, we have identified genetic variation specifically associated to the development of psoriatic arthritis, a problem that has been elusive for many years (doi10.1136/annrheumdis-2018-214158).

Our group has coordinated a clinical trial that shows that direct oral anticoagulant rivaroxaban is not a useful alternative to vitamin K antagonists in preventing thrombotic events in antiphospholipid antibody syndrome (doi.org/10.7326/M19-0291).
